Choo! Choo! It’s the 17th Annual Model Train Festival at Tacoma’s Washington History Museum from Friday, December 21 through Tuesday, January 1, 2013! Train enthusiasts are welcome to come and see the huge display of model trains from all over Washington! The displays will occupy every floor of the museum and include the largest permanent model train layout in the state. Plus take a ride on the Polar Plaza Express, a ride-on train that will travel between the Washington State History Museum and the Tacoma Art Museum.
And, just for kids ages 1-18, it’s a LEGO – Train Design Competition! On Wednesday, December 19 and Thursday, December 20, kids are invited to design, build, and submit an entry into this first ever WSHS LEGO train display! Entries must be delivered in-person to the museum on December 19 and 20 during open hours. Just one car, engine, or station per entrant, and entries may be no larger than 14 inches long and 6 inches wide. All entries will be displayed in the History Lab for the run of the 2012 Model Train Festival., with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons granted by an elite team of judges!
And just for opening weekend, December 21, 22 and 23, Santa will be coming to town for photos! Get your child’s picture with Santa in front of a holiday train backdrop from 11:00am – 3:00pm on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Skip the mall and have photos taken by Lisa Hystak Photography while you’re enjoying the train displays.
